Blog 3: composing the next track

For the next scene I decided to introduce more melodic elements while still not relying on these elements to carry the track. For this scene, the settings are described as “the jagged terrain gives way to an infinite, black void. The ground beneath the figure transitions from solid rock to a slick, obsidian-like surface that absorbs all light. The horizon is obliterated, swallowed by the sea of darkness ahead. A faint mist clings to the ground, swirling like restless spirits. Above, the sky dissolves into a chaotic expanse of churning clouds, their edges glowing faintly with erratic flashes of deep red and indigo.

To produce the black void described in the setting I needed to make sure this would have an immense impact on the listener. I started off by using a simple chord progression in the intro with leads into a heavy sub that has a 1/6 rhythm, this then leads into a huge reverb swell which to me portrays the feeling of a void successfully as it feels like the air is being pulled out of the listeners ears. I still felt like I needed to add an element of mystery as the script mood is described as “Overwhelming despair and unease.”

I found a vocal sample, chopped it, and inserted it into the piece. The vocal sample interacts with the reverb automation to create a beautiful immersive sound which is the highlight of the piece for me. The vocal sample is from a Bollywood song and to me is very reminiscent of dune which is one of my influences for this project. The vocal sample is hardly saying any words which perfectly supports the mystery I am trying to highlight as it leaves the listener trying to figure out what is being said.

The main challenge I faced while producing this piece was to lengthen it as i could not figure out how to progress the track without the listener getting bored. I solved this by introducing silence and re introducing all the elements but this time the vocals are put into a sampler. I then used a midi drum groove to get a percussive vocal chop that adds a new dimension and color to the piece this to me perfectly represented “the sky dissolves into a chaotic expanse of churning clouds, their edges glowing faintly with erratic flashes of deep red and indigo.
