BLOG 5: transitions in film music.

Film soundtracks are full of transitions as the music will change according to the scene, which is why even though unnoticed, transitional techniques in film music are key. Transitions also help to signal an upcoming moment to the audience and to switch the pace of the scene. In  track 2 I use a heavily processed arpeggio phrase which is the main driving element of the track but there is a point in the track where it went on for too long which resulted in a boring feeling, to circumvent this I used a low pass filter to blend it into the background as another element takes its place in the song this one example of a transition I had to create in the project to change the pace and keep the track interesting.

A traditional film music technique to bridge the gap between two scenes is called a sound bridge (Deguzman, 2023). There are a few ways to create a sound bridge that closes the gap between two scenes, for example, Dialogue sound bridge, Sound effect sound bridge, Music sound bridge.

Dialogue sound bridge involves using a dialogue from the upcoming scene which foreshadows what’s going to happen next, this technique, although very useful is not relevant for my project as there is no dialogue involved in LENS. Sound effect sound bridge involves using a sound effect or sound design from the next scene in the scene before, this technique helps to tie in both songs and can also foreshadow the upcoming music in the next scene, this technique makes the 2 songs share something in common and makes the next song feel familiar. Music sound bridge involves using the score of the movie to transition from one scene to another, in conventional film practice this technique is  almost heard in every movie but I feel for this project this technique will not be as powerful because I do not have any scenes without music so the only gap to bridge is between the music itself. For my project I will be creating leitmotifs throughout which give a similar effect to a music sound bridge.
