BLOG 9: analysis of other music
In this blog I will discuss some of my music references for this project. The first song i will be analyzing is “the son of Flynn” from the Tron legacy soundtrack which was made by daft punk. This song was my first introduction to film soundtracks, when I first listened to this song i was in awe of the feeling it brought me, over the years i have been able to figure why the song makes me feel a certain way, firstly the song is in the key of C minor which sets the tone and feeling for the whole track, it is a known fact that a minor mode gives the listener an overall darker and melancholy feel as compared to a major mode. Next the main element in the track is an arpeggio which is supported by some strings and synth pads. The bass for this song just follows the rhythm of the arpeggio, in this project I have incorporated these techniques in almost every track, but I have not relied on arpeggios and strings. i have tried to use them sparingly to avoid the arpeggios from sounding boring and repetitive.
The next track i will discuss is called Outlands, part II which is the final track from the Tron legacy soundtrack, this track has that classic film music sound with orchestral elements, i am disccusing this track because i want to make something like this with the same energy and to do so i would need to figure out which individual elements give this song its energy.
This song is at 113 bpm which i feel contributes to the track’s energy. This track starts with a strong rhythm in the beginning with some staccato strings and slowly dissipates into a saw wave pad. Then towards the end all the elements pile up onto each other to create a huge crescendo. This track taught me the importance of having contrasting elements that complement each other well. This track also has shown me how i can build my crescendos by letting the track breathe for a little bit.
